Laos

Located in South-east Asia, Lao PDR is landlocked between China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Like switzerland in Europe, Laos is at the crossroads of South East Asian countries.

It is as well the smallest country of the region with a 5.6 Million people population, covering a 236,800 km² surface.

A strong cultural heritage, a rich history and a virgin nature are together the main ingredients of Laos.

For the last 20 years and the country slow opening to the market economy, Laos has been through remarkable political and economical changes, and is now attracting foreign investors in various sectors like mining, wood processing, handicraft, hydropower and tourism.

Bokeo Province

Bokeo province is located at the three-bordered intersection of Lao PDR, Myanmar and Thailand and at the “Economic Quadrangle” where Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and China meet.

Houay Xai is Bokeo province capital. It is a border town with Thailand, and thanks to its strategic location, the city is busy and prosperous.

In Bokeo there are 36 townships, more than 400 villages and a total population of 135,000. The Province is home to a large number of ethnic minorities, each with their own lifestyle and customs. They’ve always lived in harmony with each other and are all Lao citizens.

The photo shows a group of Akha (Ikaw or Kaw) people from the Golden Triangle area taken in 1900.

The named “Bokeo” means the pits of sapphires or called “Keo-Praseuth” because it is a rich mining centre for gold and sapphire. Commercial mining for precious stones and gold is a special feature of the province.

Nam Nhone River

The project damsite is located 7.6 km upstream from Nam Nhone and Mekong rivers confluence, 19 km upstream from Houay Xai town, at a small village called Ban Nam Nhone Kao. The down stream of the dam is only lightly populated with 4 villages 600 people, mainly from ethnic minorities.

Nam Nhone HPP being a run off scheme, there is no flood danger for the population living downstream the dam. Indeed with a very limited storage capacity, the project will not in any way increase the main stream flow.

Nevertheless, the pond storage capacity would be big enough for local villagers fishery activities.
