Project technical overview:

Nam Nhone Hydropower project is a run offthe riverproject with a low

small general layout of the project

environmental impact.

The project includes a small dam / weir(RCCwith spillway), a water intake equipped with a settling basin, a 1.2 km long concrete water channel, a surge tank, a penstock and a power house equipped with 2 Francis turbines.

NNHPP is expected to save 8,000 tC0² per year by displacing fossile energy import, and will consequently receive CERs (Carbon Emmission Réductions).

Electricity generation and distribution

electricity generation

NNHPC production/Bokeo demand

Nam Nhone should supply 80% of the province electricity needs in 2007. Synchronized with the Thai network, Nam Nhone HPP will sell its whole production to EDL, that will realize a substantial saving.

The extra production generated during the rainy season will be sent to Thailand, whereas the lack of energy during the dry season will be filled in by Thai electricity import.

An agreement has been concluded between PEA (Thai electricity distribution authority) and EDL regarding this synchronization.

CO₂ Emmission Reductions (CERs)

Nam Nhone Hydropower Project has beenselescted by STEA(ScienceTechnology and CEREnvironmentAgency) to be part of the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) under the United Nations supervision (UNFCC)

NNHPP is expected to replace fossil fuel generated energy and is expected to save up to 7000t of CO²per year. It will therefore take an active part in the greenhouse gas emission policy in which all the signatories of the Kyoto protocole are involved. Laos is one of them, and NNHPP fulfills all the criteria set by the UNFCC. This extra income will substantially improve the project financial performance.
